Today- students were given an open-ended task- create and conduct a survey. We talked about what a survey is and why we would want to conduct one. We brainstormed a few survey question ideas and left the rest to be decided. Students were grouped into pairs or groups of 3, they worked together to decide on ONE question to ask in their survey, and then decided the possible choices. There was no direction as to how they were to organize the survey and collect the results- each group talked, compromised, and collaborated on their choices...It is too bad the pictures didn't come out clear- so you could see the choices each group made. It was quite cool to step back- give less direction and let their collaboration and knowledge guide them- it is possible!! When each group was done creating their survey- they were then allowed to go outside the walls of our classroom to conduct their survey (see above). While we did start with our own classmates, we then traveled through the school to survey other students and adults we came across. It always a neat thing for them to see how their learning can transfer, and how it makes sense in the real world. It is also cool that they are learning to guide their own learning and take responsibility and most of all, talking about the learning that is taking place! It was fun all around!!

Great work kids. I'd love to hear what some of the questions and answers were!
